Communication skills are important to everyone. These skills are how we give and receive information and convey our ideas and opinions with those around us. To an employer, good communication skills are essential. In fact, employers consistently rank good communication skills at the top of the list for potential employees.
A job interview can be an indication to employers of how the candidate or employee will interact with supervisors, co-workers, and customers or resolve conflicts when they arise. Remember that non-verbal communication is also critical in an interview. Employers expect good eye contact, good posture, and “active” listening.
Youth with disabilities ages 16 to 21 and their parents have the chance to experience an introduction to workplace interpersonal and professional skills with two (2) Youth Employment Workshops presented in partnership by Independent Living Resource Center (ILRC), Missouri Rehabilitation and Employment (MORE) Group, and Vocational Rehabilitation (VR). There will be an opportunity to learn about the services Vocational Rehabilitation provides, how to fill out job applications, and learn about the dos and don’ts of job interviews.
There will be a workshop Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 4 pm-6 pm at Capital Mall Community Room, 3600 Country Club Dr, Jefferson City, MO 65109. A second workshop will be at Camden County Library, 89 Rodeo Rd, Camdenton, MO 65020 on Thursday, October 17, 2013 from 4 pm-6 pm. A representative from Alternative Opportunities will be available to answer questions at the Camdenton workshop. There is no cost associated with the workshops and snacks will be provided.

MORE Group offers employment assessment, placement and retention services through individualized services, smaller caseloads, team approach, innovative thinking, and strong business relationships in the community. Services are completely individualized and the client’s specific interests and abilities drive the process. There are no group activities for clients at MORE Group.
Independent Living Resource Center, Inc. (ILRC) is a non-residential, consumer-controlled, not-for-profit organization that provides services and support for individuals with disabilities in Southern Callaway, Camden, Cole, Miller, Morgan, Moniteau, and Osage counties. ILRC works to promote greater independence and empowerment for persons with disabilities through advocacy and resources.
VR specializes in employment and training services that can assist a consumer in becoming employed. An individual needs to have a physical or mental impairment that causes problems with working to be eligible for services. VR offers a wide range of services that are individualized for the consumer’s needs. Some of the services that may be available are guidance and counseling, job-seeking skills and job placement, and vocational training. VR also provides assistance with transition services, supported employment services, assistive technology services, and the Ticket to Work Program.
